Tickets are now on sale for the 2011 Light the Night fundraising concert for leukaemia research and cancer patient resources, to be held at 7.30pm on Monday 31 October at the City Recital Hall, Angel Place.
Now in its seventh year Light the Night has become a highlight on the Sydney Entertainment calendar, raising more than $200,000 so far. All money raised this year will fund the Light the Night Research Grant that supports a promising new Gene Control in Acute Leukaemia project being undertaken by St Vincent’s Hospital’s Haematology Research Team, as well as The Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation.
Each year talented Australian artists donate their time to help raise money for this much needed cause. Performing this year will be leading Australian jazz vocalist Emma Pask, multi-award winning singer and actor Paul Capsis, Wicked star David Harris, Australian theatre actress, singer and comedienne Queenie van de Zandt, up and coming independent artist Ben Abraham, popular musical theatre performer Michael Griffiths and acclaimed Flamenco Guitarist Damien De Boos-Smith. This year’s performance also showcases three stars of Hairspray Esther Hannaford, Jack Chambers and Trevor Ashley, as well as beloved cabaret performers Lesley Hancock, Marika Aubrey, Gillian Cosgriff and Sheridan Harbridge. Rounding out this impressive line up will be group performances by Matthew Robinson with Students from the Australian Institute of Music, students from The McDonald College and the cast of the smash hit musical Mary Poppins. More performers will be announced in coming weeks.
Light the Night is the legacy of Matthew Rennie, a brave young man who fought a three year battle against leukaemia, unfortunately passing away shortly before the 2007 concert. Matthew’s courageous fight inspired his two brothers, musical theatre performers Shaun Rennie and Adam Rennie, and friends Monica Smith and Greg Smith to create Light the Night through which Matthew will continue to inspire.
“Over the past 6 years Light the Night has always proven to be a very special night and we are honoured that so many incredible artists from all different genres give up their time and talent to support this event as we fight for a cure for Leukaemia, “ said Shaun Rennie. “It’s simply incredible to me that this will be our 7th Concert, and I can honestly say that this year is shaping up to be our most exciting yet.”
