A Christmas Carol

A Triumph That Inspires Emotion, Spreads Generosity, and Fills Hearts with Joy

Reviewed by Brendan Daynes

A Christmas Carol has truly established itself as a Melbourne tradition, and it is no surprise that the production is now in its third season. Born at The Old Vic in London and now revived once again at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre, this adaptation is a masterpiece of theatre. Every element of the production is thoughtfully designed to mesmerise audiences of all ages, blending an immersive atmosphere, heartfelt performances, and music that embodies the spirit of the season.

This year, the role of Ebenezer Scrooge is played by Erik Thomson, and he truly makes the character his own. His emotional depth shines throughout, especially in act two, where Scrooge undergoes his transformation. The joy that Scrooge feels by the end of the story is felt by all, and Thomson captures this beautifully, filling the theatre with light and warmth.

The entire cast earned multiple standing ovations with their heartfelt and emotionally charged performances. Alison Whyte as the Ghost of Christmas Past was ethereal yet commanding, compelling Scrooge to confront his past. Samantha Morley as the Ghost of Christmas Present was vibrant and insightful, guiding Scrooge to understand how his present actions shape the future. Aisha Adara returning for a second season as Little Fan brought an innocence and sweetness that added a layer of warmth to the story. Tim Wright brings Bob Cratchit to life with incredible skill, balancing the character’s joy and heartbreak with profound warmth and resilience. His connection to his family, and particularly to Tiny Tim, was portrayed with an authenticity that resonated throughout the theatre. Tiny Tim, played at this performance by Mira Feldman, was brilliant, bringing an innocence to the role that underscored the story’s emotional core. Sarah Morrison brought grace and emotional depth to the role of Belle, poignantly portraying the heartbreak of lost love and adding a tender layer to Scrooge’s journey of reflection and redemption. Together, the entire cast delivered an unforgettable performance, showcasing exceptional talent and dedication to their roles.

What sets this production apart is not only the power of Charles Dickens’ timeless tale but also the spectacular way in which this story is brought to life on stage. The Australian production team has done an incredible job, making every element feel as integral and as impressive as it was in the original London production. The design, including staging, costumes, lighting, and sets, works seamlessly to frame the show’s important social and moral messages, creating a visually enchanting and immersive experience. Although the story contains somer darker and somber moments, the uplifting message that underlies it all is what truly resonates—the message of redemption, kindness, and compassion.

From the moment the audience enters the theatre, there is a sense of community and inclusion, with cast members handing out mince pies and fruit while musicians play festive tunes. This welcoming gesture, paired with the interactive and immersive nature of the performance—where performers frequently break the fourth wall to engage directly with the audience—creates a shared journey of redemption and joy, creating an experience that embodies the true spirit of Christmas.

Restaged by Jan Di Pietro, Lizzie Gee’s choreography and movement is full of life, with standout moments like the traditional Ceilidh dance woven throughout the performance. This festive and rhythmic choreography captures the pure, unfiltered joy of celebration, and it’s impossible not to smile while watching it. The use of bells to perform carols with minimal instrumentation is particularly moving. There is something truly magical about an entire theatre filled with people listening quietly as the hauntingly beautiful sound of bells resonates through the space. Together, these elements capture the essence of community and togetherness, bringing the story to life with festive expression and genuine warmth.

Beyond the performance itself, this production also embodies the spirit of giving. This year, the production is partnering with SecondBite to raise money and awareness for those in need. This partnership exemplifies the community, compassion, and caring for others and extends those values beyond the theatre. It’s a wonderful reminder that the message of Dickens’ story is not just meant to be heard, it is meant to be lived.

A Christmas Carol is an experience that touches the heart and uplifts the spirit. With heartfelt performances and a beautifully melodic soundtrack of Christmas carols, this truly immersive production delights both first-time viewers and returning fans eager to experience its magic. This story of redemption, compassion, and joy has become a cherished Melbourne tradition, reminding us of what really matters during the festive season.
