The King Comes To Sydney!
The King & I recently opened at the iconic Sydney Opera House after a successful tour that visited Brisbane and Melbourne.
The King and I was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s fifth musical together and is one of the jewels in their crown. The story is based on Margaret Landon’s 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam, which took inspiration from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, a British governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam (now Thailand) in the early 1860s.
Winner of 3 Helpmann Awards, including Best Musical, this legendary production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s time-honoured classic has already sold more tickets than any show ever staged at the Sydney Opera House in pre-sales.The beautiful score includes the songs “I Whistle a Happy Tune”, “Getting to Know You”, “Shall We Dance?” and “Hello, Young Lovers”.
The King and I stars LisaMcCune as Anna Leonowens and Teddy Tahu Rhodes as the King of Siam. Joining them are Chinese-born Australian opera singer Shu-Cheen Yu as Lady Thiang; Adrian Li Donni as LunTha; Jenny Lie as Tup Tim and Marty Rhone as The Kralahome. This magnificent production is directed by Christopher Renshaw.
DanceLife was lucky enough to see a sample of the show and it looks SPECTACULAR! We also had the chance to interview the shows star Lisa McCune, so keep an eye out for that article over the coming weeks!
The King & I is playing a strictly limited season at The Sydney Opera House until 1st November
