Johan Inger’s Carmen
The Australian Ballet
Exclusive to Sydney in 2024, Johan Inger’s Carmen masterfully combines classical and contemporary dance for a gripping reimagining of the love affair between the titular femme fatale and her wrathful admirer.
With its modern heartbeat, Southern Spanish soul and famous George Bizet score, Carmen is ballet like you’ve never seen it before.
The Story
Created in 2015, Inger’s contemporary retelling of Prosper Mérimée’s 1845 novella is a darkly compelling story of the dangerously seductive Carmen, whose love affair with Don José ends in brutal tragedy.
The Music
Rodion Shchedrin added layers of rhythm, percussion and instrumental colours to the reimagined Bizet score, written for his wife, prima ballerina assoluta Maya Plisetskaya. The score will be performed by Opera Australia Orchestra.
The Choreographer
Swedish choreographer Johan Inger has danced with Nederlands Dans Theater and created works for leading companies all over Europe. His short work, I New Then, captivated Australian audiences in our 2022 Season. Inger won the Benois de la Danse in 2016 for best choreographer for Carmen.
