Australia’s premiere international dance on film festival, Inspired Dance Film Festival, was officially launched late September with tickets currently on sale. The festival has announced is program off the back of its brand-new partnership with the Queensland Ballet at its new home in Brisbane, the Talbot Theatre at the Thomas Dixon Centre. The festival will present both online and at the Thomas Dixon Centre, and screen 60 films officially selected from 164 submissions from all over the world, representing 31 countries and encompassing a diverse range of subjects including gender identity, disability, cultural identity. The festival has also announced an esteemed line up of judges and ambassadors including international film and theatre star, Adam Garcia; award-winning choreographer and director, Kelley Abbey; TV star and musical theatre icon, Todd McKenney; world renowned creator of Tap Dogs, Dein Perry; Artistic Director of Strictly Come Dancing – UK, Jason Gilkison; former Senior Artist at Bangarra, Director and Filmmaker, Deborah Brown; choreographer, Stephen Tannos; and Award-Winning Choreographer, Sarah Boulter.
Rohan Seinor IDFF Co-Founder, said: “We are so excited to be presenting IDFF in the newly refurbished Thomas Dixon Centre, it just feels right. Brisbane is a fabulously creative city and TDC is the perfect venue to present a 4-day smorgasbord of screenings, educational workshops, and discussion panel. Our filmmakers come from all over the world and include Emmy award winning directors, Broadway choreographers, and internationally renowned dance companies. It’s a festival for lovers of differing genres of dance, and those keen to learn more about the craft of dance filmmaking. We sincerely hope the city of Brisbane embraces IDFF22. The 2022 Festival has announced a dynamic program of film categories including: Student Dance Film, Dance Short Film. Arts/Experimental Dance Film, Queer Dance Film, Disabled Dance Film, Mobile Device Dance Film, Live Performance Capture Dance Film, Documentary, Extended Short or Feature Dance Film.
Other program highlights include Dances at The Royal Palaces, a beautiful Danish documentary which captures a moment last year when the Danish Royal Family opened their private residence, Amalienborg Palace, to host a brand new choreographed ballet; deeply moving documentary, Dance for Change, set In Dzaleka refugee camp (Malawi), home to over 40,000 people where an exciting dance scene is emerging; exciting new Irish dance celebration, Steps Of Freedom: The Story Of Irish Dance; and a beautiful Australian short film called, Look The Part, about a disabled young cleaner who yearns to dance.
Inspired Dance Film Festival grew out of adversity when co-founder Ian Knowles diagnosed in 2013 with a terminal brain tumour and given 18 months to live. Despite this shocking news, Ian was led on a journey to find purpose again when it became clear that not only would he survive but continue to thrive. He came to realise he still loved dance and his biggest desire was to give back to the industry that has supported him. It took a while for that idea to germinate but what grew is Inspired Dance Film Festival. Knowing that this was more than a one-man job, Ian enlisted friend and fellow Perth dancer Rohan Seinor to co-found the festival with him. Whilst having had an extensive career as a performer himself, the thought of creating opportunities and avenues for other dancers with the same love and connection for dance was too enticing, and the perfect vehicle to segue into a career beyond performing. They are both so proud to provide the opportunity for the dance community to explore dance on film both here in Australia and internationally.
