Monash Performing Arts Centres Presents Wayfinder

Wayfinder

An Immersive Contemporary Dance Experience Set to Music by Hiatus Kaiyote

Monash University Performing Arts Centres (MPAC) is thrilled to present Wayfinder, an exhilarating explosion of heart from Townsville/Gurambilbarra-based Dancenorth Australia that expertly blends contemporary dance, visual art, and music, showing at the Alexander Theatre on 18 – 19 October.

Directed by Amber Haines and Kyle Page, Wayfinder features the music of three-time Grammy nominated Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote and sound artist Byron J. Scullin to create a soaring composition evoking pleasure and possibility. Wayfinder is a tonic for the times, speaking to our sensorial nature and recognising connection as the central axis of the universe, transcending the words that have come to define us.

Described as “thrillingly inspired” by The Guardian, Wayfinder is brought to life by renowned interdisciplinary artist Hiromi Tango, whose costume design and visual work are an explosion of colour, texture, and shapes. Hiromi’s work has also featured at international exhibitions in the United States, Belgium, Dubai and throughout Asia Pacific including Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia and New Zealand.

Returning to MPAC for the first time in five years, since ‘Dust’ in 2019, Dancenorth is deeply committed to the creation of adventurous, thoughtfully conceived, and highly acclaimed new work. Dancenorth has presented work in over 45 International Arts Festivals and venues around Australia and the world. With a national reputation for producing works of the highest quality, Dancenorth has received two Helpmann Awards, two Australian Dance Awards, two Green Room Awards, the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Group Award, and the PAC Australia Impact
Award.
