Laughs, Music, and Mischief: 50 Shades! The Musical Parody Delivers a Night to Remember
Reviewed by Brendan Daynes
50 Shades! The Musical Parody invites audiences to a riotous romp through the best-selling novel’s most memorable moments, all served up with a cheeky grin and a splash of mischief. It’s like enjoying a perfectly mixed cocktail—sharp, sweet, and with just the right amount of zest—making for a night of unforgettable fun and flavour. This high-energy production takes the original’s sultry allure and adds a comedic twist, transforming the show into an uproarious celebration that promises to keep you laughing from start to finish.
From the moment you step into the venue, you’re immediately immersed in the playful chaos. The space is alive with energy, as the cast mingles with and serves shots to patrons, setting the stage for the night’s antics. As the lights dim and the music begins, the playful twist on the infamous tale of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey quickly takes shape. Belle Parkinson’s portrayal of Anastasia is both endearing and hilariously exaggerated, capturing the character’s naivety and curiosity with a wink and a nod. Opposite her, James Elmer’s Christian Grey is a charismatic blend of charm and comedic flair, embodying a character who embraces his absurdities with a delightful sense of humour.
The supporting cast are a powerhouse of talent. Belinda John and Belinda Jenkin, as Pam and Carol respectively, are just hilarious. As book club members who plunge into the world of Fifty Shades, their impeccable comedic timing and complete commitment to their middle-aged, sex-obsessed characters create an exaggerated yet delightfully relatable portrayal of how the book’s impact might have turned book club discussions into a frenzy of desire. Sophie Loughran, in her role as Bev, joins Pam and Carol in this comedic whirlwind. In her role as Katherine, she provides a sharp contrast as the mean girl “friend” of Anastasia. Loughran’s performance is marked by her ability to blend biting humour with a playful, over-the-top enthusiasm that adds another layer of comedy to the show.
The ensemble members add a dynamic layer of excitement to the show. Patrick Condidorio, Massimo Zuccara and Will Moffat, captivate the audience not only with their impressive physiques but also with their undeniable talent. Grace Liang, who also serves as Dance Captain, stands out as the only female in the ensemble with her captivating stage presence and impeccable choreography.
The musical numbers are the heart of the show, each one a delightful blend of humour and talent. Under the direction of David Youings, the songs are catchy and cleverly written, showcasing the vocal prowess of the cast. The choreography, crafted by David Venn, is energetic and perfectly in sync with the playful tone of the production. From sultry Spanish dance routines to comedic interludes, the choreography keeps the audience engaged and entertained.
The show’s appeal is universal, drawing laughter and applause from both men and women in the audience. It’s clear that this production isn’t just for fans of the book; it’s a hilarious and inclusive experience that everyone can enjoy. Beyond the on-stage antics, the experience extends into the audience’s own personal playground. Themed cocktails and opportunities for outrageous photos add an extra layer of fun.
50 Shades The Musical Parody is a fun-filled night out that will leave you laughing, singing, and dancing long after the show concludes. The cast’s commitment and characterisation are top-notch, the musical numbers are a joy, and the overall production is a testament to the incredible talent involved. This is a show that celebrates the fun and cheeky spirit within us all – a true delight for anyone looking to escape into a world of laughter and mischief.
