We Are The Energy We Leave Behind!
The Joymaker: Article Nine
Author Christine Denny
Hello again and welcome back to The Joy Maker!
I was recently out and about and stopped for a cup of coffee, prior to a hike. And whilst drinking my delightful beverage, engaged myself in conversation with a thoughtful young man who was also enjoying his morning brew. As we chatted about all things beautiful and meaningful and solved the world’s problems, I happened upon a theory that is the basis for this column today. And that hypothesis is this:
“We are nothing more or less, than the energy we leave behind!”
The more and more I ponder this assertion, the greater the sense of intrigue becomes, and I invite you to read that statement a few times and see what response it elicits from you. As for me, it is a little eye opening and startling to be frank, as the truth of the matter has me reviewing exactly what type of energy I usually leave when I depart a scene. Happily, I can report that often I am full of joy when I leave an event, conversation, or activity. Usually laughing or feeling a sense of accomplishment for what just transpired. However, I would be lying if I did not equally admit, that there are times when the energy I leave behind is rather unbecoming to say the least.
I have discovered that in these situations it is usually a dominating feeling of anxiety that underpins the behaviours manifested like anger, aggression, abruptness, impatience, or rudeness. And the anxiousness underwriting all this, is usually the outward signalling of perfectionism gone mad! But as I always say, awareness is the key to changing behaviours and reaching for a better state of being. And focusing on the resulting “energetic footprint” when you have left an occasion, venue or activity can be a wonderful way to modify said patterns. Or even more effectively – to ponder the atmosphere you wish to foster, generate, or gift to your surroundings before you get there!
Once you put into perspective, that you are nothing more or less than the last imprint you left on your environment, it changes your expectations of yourself and others, and enables you to hone the vibe you bring to what you do, as opposed to fixating on the actual thing you are trying to achieve. In simple terms you want to focus on the energy anchoring the moment, rather than on the moment itself. For what I suddenly realized during this conversation, is that we often, inadvertently, subvert the very thing we are trying to achieve, by trying too hard. That is, when we are trying to be perfect, we set ourselves up for stress and failure, as our outward persona can verge on agitated and worried at the very time, we are trying to create a fun, dynamic and relaxed experience for our guests, class, or attendees.
This has been my reality many a time, and now, by refocusing on the energy I am trying to bring to the gatherings, rather than the actual thing I am bringing [ e.g., a cake, a class, a fun day, a well-run event etc], things seem to go much more smoothly. Of course, do your prep and show up ready with great content and commitment. But then – I highly recommend you focus on creating the welcoming and desired feel you wish to permeate your endeavours.
The thing is, that people and situations tend to take on your exuberance, sparkle, and bounce. And you can feel that energy all around you both during and after any event, interaction, or communication. No matter how well prepared anything you do is. No matter how vigilant you are or how wonderful your skill set. At the end of the day, you are only as good as the energy you leave behind and each time you come together with the world around you, the measure is set back to neutral, in anticipation of your next strike.
You are the energy you leave behind. It is as simple as that.
It does not matter what you did yesterday or what you do tomorrow. For the people in your direct vicinity, the only thing that matters is the energy you bring right there and then!
It is all about the here and now!
So today, I invite you to think about the energetic imprint you wish to leave your classes. Your families. Your friends. Your business colleagues. Your children. Your activities. Your events. Your surrounds!
And always remember:
“You are nothing more or less, than the energy you leave behind!”
