Sold out in London, Paris, Tokyo and Beijing, Joey McKneely’s vibrant new stage production of the classic dance musical WEST SIDE STORY comes to Sydney in July 2010 for a strictly limited season at the Lyric Theatre, Star City.
The story of Romeo and Juliet is transported to the turbulent streets of New York City in the 1950s. Star-crossed lovers are caught between rival street gangs. Considered a great groundbreaking musical, West Side Story has remained a poignant, provocative and emotionally devastating piece of theater for over half a century. Dark in tone and content, the show is flush with many of legendary composer Leonard Bernstein’s most famous compositions, offering a richly layered score. Factor in recreations of original director and choreographer Jerome Robbins’ equally iconic choreography, and the production becomes an electrifying piece of musical drama.
West Side Story has been described as “a masterpiece of musical theatre” (The Daily Mail) and “a musical landmark” (The Guardian). West Side Story is packed with unforgettable songs including Maria, Tonight, Somewhere, America and I Feel Pretty. The movie version went on to win an incredible 10 ACADEMY AWARDS (including BEST PICTURE) and further cemented the reputation of this undoubted masterpiece.
